SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR SPEARFISHING
IN NORTH CAROLINA

Staying safe while spearfishing off the North Carolina coast is just as important as landing a great catch. Follow these simple but critical guidelines to make your freedive or scuba spearfishing trip safe and memorable.

When fishing with Instigator, we handle all safety measures so you can focus on enjoying the adventure. Do you have questions or need advice? Reach out anytime for personalized guidance, gear recommendations or local diving insights: Our experienced crew is here to ensure you're fully prepared for a safe and unforgettable North Carolina hunting adventure.

Weather & Water Conditions

Before heading out, Instigator checks the weather and sea conditions. We are mindful of strong currents, shifting tides and the increased risk of storms - especially during hurricane season. It's essential to stay informed about local advisories or warnings issued by the Coast Guard or other authorities.

We never head out in questionable conditions. If the weather or water doesn’t look safe, it’s best to postpone your trip. A rescheduled adventure is far better than a risky one - and ensures a safer, more enjoyable experience every time.

Use Appropriate Gear

If you bring your own gear, make sure to keep your spearfishing and dive gear in top condition. In North Carolina, water temperatures can drop in fall and winter, so wear a thicker wetsuit if needed. Always carry a sharp diver’s knife for safety. Use a quality speargun or pole spear, float lines and a catch bag. Ask our crew for advice, we’re always happy to help you gear up safely.

What To Bring

Bring protective sun gear like a hat, sunglasses and light layers for changing weather. Spray tan lotion or spray sunscreen is not allowed on the boat. Regular sunblock is fine. Wear light-colored, non-skid, closed-toe shoes as dark soles can mark the deck. We recommend packing a snack or lunch to keep you fueled during your trip. Fresh water and ice will be available.

Communication Equipment

We have two VHF radios and an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) on all of our boats. We now offer Star Link on our vessels for an additional $10 per charter.

Freedive Spearfishing

Be honest about your skill level and fitness. Always stay aware of your surroundings and watch for changing conditions or underwater hazards. Proper training and certification are key! Listen to your body, if you’re tired or don’t feel right, skip the dive. There’s always another day to fish. Freedive spearfishing, especially on North Carolina wrecks, can be demanding. Avoid deep dives or strong currents if you’re not trained for them.

Scuba Spearfishing

Always scuba dive within your training, experience level and physical condition. If a dive feels too deep, too technical or beyond your comfort zone - don’t do it. There’s no shame in staying safe. Listen to your body. If you're feeling unwell, tired or just off, it's better to postpone the dive than push through and risk injury.

Responsible diving means knowing when to say no. Remember, diving should be safe, fun and rewarding - so respect your limits and make smart, informed choices every time you hit the water.

Be Aware of Marine Life

North Carolina’s waters are teeming with incredible marine life - but some species, like sharks and lionfish, deserve your respect and caution. Avoid sudden movements or aggressive behavior and always honor the natural environment around you. Take time to learn about the common aquatic species you may encounter, their behaviors and how to respond safely.

Knowing what to expect helps you avoid unwanted encounters and makes your dive more enjoyable and secure. Remember, you’re a guest in their underwater world - treat all marine life with respect and admiration for an unforgettable spearfishing experience.

Shark Awareness

North Carolina waters are home to sand tiger sharks, barracuda and other big predators. Avoid spearing fish near sharks and never feed or provoke them. Stay calm if you see large marine life and don’t splash or thrash. Spearfishing safely means respecting the ocean and its creatures.

Lionfish Awareness

Lionfish are an invasive, venomous species commonly found in North Carolina waters. Their long, sharp spines deliver a painful sting that can cause intense, radiating pain and swelling. Avoid Contact: Never touch or handle lionfish unless you are trained and equipped to do so safely.

Know the Symptoms: A sting can cause severe pain, swelling and sometimes systemic symptoms like nausea or difficulty breathing. First Aid: Immerse the affected area in hot (not scalding) water to help neutralize the venom and reduce pain. Seek medical attention immediately after a sting.

Monitor NDL and Tank Pressure

When scuba spearfishing, it’s essential to regularly check your No Decompression Limits (NDL) and tank pressure throughout every dive. Use a reliable dive computer or dive tables to track your depth and bottom time, making sure you stay well within safe limits. Keep a close eye on your tank pressure to avoid running low on air underwater.

Always plan your dive so you surface with ample air reserves, and deploy your SMB (surface marker buoy) as you ascend for added safety and visibility. Staying aware and prepared ensures every dive is a safe, smooth, and enjoyable adventure.

Mark Your Position

Always use Surface Marker Buoys (SMBs) to mark your position during ascents. These bright markers increase your visibility to boats and fellow divers, helping prevent accidental collisions and keeping you safe. For drift dives - also called live dives - your SMB plays an even more crucial role. Currents can carry you away from your entry point, so your SMB helps your boat locate and safely pick you up after the dive.

Deploy your SMB early during your ascent and keep it securely attached to ensure a safe and efficient recovery. Marking your location is a simple but vital step that greatly enhances safety both underwater and on the surface.

Alcohol and drugs

Never use alcohol or drugs before or during a spearfishing trip. Stay clear-headed for your safety and your crew’s. Impairment can lead to serious water accidents. Instigator is a drug and alcohol free crew and we have to follow random drug testing by the Maritime Consortium.

BEST SPEARFISHING SITES IN NORTH CAROLINA

North Carolina’s coast is a hidden gem for spearfishing, offering some of the best dive sites on the East Coast.

From historic shipwrecks teeming with snapper and grouper to clear offshore reefs and rocky ledges, these waters are a dream come true for freedivers and scuba hunters alike. With warm Gulf Stream currents and rich marine life, each dive promises adventure and the chance to bring home an unforgettable catch.

Lobster Ledge South

This stunning area consists of multiple fascinating ledges with depths ranging from 105 to 110 feet deep. For simplicity, we call it Lobster Ledge. However, there is nothing simple about it as life thrives here that divers do not usually see on other sites like wrecks. Here you can explore the natural living bottom, which has relief between 5 and 10 feet. This dive site is great for shelling and provides prime hunting grounds for spearfishermen and everyone planning on bagging lobsters.

While these are not megalodon ledges, our crew has found teeth here. Cindy, our lead instructor likes to call this site virgin territory as it is not a popular dive site and therefore not frequently visited by other boats.

On Lobster Ledge divers will find Lobsters, Lionfish, Hogfish, Grouper, Vermilion Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Cubaera Snapper, Spanish Hog, Trumpet Fish, Queen Angels, French Angels, multiple species of damsel and other tropical fish. If you are lucky, you might encounter a hammerhead shark during your dives at Lobster Ledge.

Lobster North Ledge

On these ledges, the depths range between 115 and 125 feet and the relief is between 5 and 10 feet. In this unique setting, divers and spearfishermen can explore the mesmerizing natural bottom instead of wreck sites. They can also encounter multiple interesting aquatic species. These include lobster, lionfish, grouper, hogfish, Butterfly Fish, Clean Angel and French Angel.

While we classify this site as prime territory for hunting lionfish and lobster, from spring to autumn spearfishermen can also target Mahi Mahi and Wahoo and African Pompano. This is in the higher water column here.In spite of the fact that both ledges offer great shelling opportunities, the North Ledge offers more shells than the South Ledge.

NORTH CAROLINA SPEARFISHING REGULATIONS

FISH RULES APP

For anyone planning an exhilarating spearfishing adventure off the North Carolina coast, we recommend downloading the Fish Rules App for Android or Apple to easily check up-to-date fishing regulations and stay compliant.

This app is incredibly accurate and automatically updates with the latest regulations based on your location.

This is as long as your phone's location services are enabled. It’s essential to check the app before heading out, especially since regulations can change overnight, typically at 12:01 AM. Having the app open before you lose cell service ensures you have the most up-to-date information for the day.

It’s worth noting that once we leave the three-mile demarcation line, cell service can become unreliable. On clear days, you might have service up to 8 miles offshore: Beyond 10 miles, service is usually nonexistent. While many seasoned divers know this, it’s helpful information for those new to offshore boating or diving.

We highly recommend downloading and checking the Fish Rules app before we set off, so you’re fully prepared and informed about the day’s regulations.

BLUEFIN TUNA FISHING IN NORTH CAROLINA

Bluefin tuna fishing in North Carolina offers an exhilarating opportunity for anglers to engage with one of the ocean's most formidable species.

This activity is conducted primarily during the peak season, December through February. This aligns with the migration patterns of giant bluefin tuna along the Outer Banks.

BLUEFIN TUNA FISHING ADVENTURES

Bluefin tuna is one of the most prized catches in North Carolina’s offshore waters. These powerful fish draw anglers from around the world each year. North Carolina’s coast is famous for producing some of the largest bluefin tuna on the East Coast.

When To Fish For Bluefin

The best time to target bluefin tuna off North Carolina is during the winter months. Late December through March is prime season. During this time, cold waters push huge schools of menhaden and bluefish along our coast. Bluefin tuna follow these baitfish close to shore.

Where To Find Them

Bluefin tuna fishing usually happens 20 to 40 miles offshore. Popular areas include the waters off Cape Lookout, Oregon Inlet and Hatteras. These spots are known for deep water, strong currents and plenty of baitfish.

Size & Strength

Bluefin tuna in North Carolina can weigh 200 to over 800 pounds. Hooking one tests your gear and your endurance. Fights often last hours and demand heavy rods, strong reels and teamwork.

Fishing Methods

Most anglers use live bait or they slow troll to catch bluefin tuna. Trolling with large baits like ballyhoo, mackerel or artificial lures is common. Many captains also use kite fishing for better bait presentation.

Rules & Regulations

Bluefin tuna fishing is tightly managed. Federal rules set daily limits and size restrictions. Always check NOAA’s latest bluefin tuna regulations before planning a trip. Permits may be required for certain catches.

Why It’s Special

Few fishing experiences match the rush of battling a giant bluefin. North Carolina’s unique coastal waters make this one of the best places in the U.S. to catch a true giant.

What To Bring

Bring the right gear to handle North Carolina’s big bluefin or use ours. We provide all the gear, tackle and bait you’ll need on board. Heavy-duty rods and reels are a must. Check that your reels hold plenty of strong line. Many anglers use 80 to 130-pound test line. Wear layered, waterproof clothing. Winter offshore trips can be cold and wet. Gloves help protect your hands during long fights with tuna. Non-slip, light-colored, closed-toe shoes keep you steady on deck without leaving a mark on fishing vessels. Leave the flip-flops at home as they can lead to hooks in feet! Pack high-energy snacks and water. Bluefin trips can last all day. Staying hydrated and fueled keeps you sharp. Bring a camera to capture your trophy fish.

How To Prepare

Check weather and sea conditions before your trip. Offshore winter seas can be rough. Talk with your captain about what to expect. Get familiar with bluefin tuna fishing rules. Know size limits, bag limits and required permits. Bring seasickness prevention if needed. A rough sea can spoil a trip fast. Rest well the night before. Bluefin fishing demands focus, strength and stamina.

Authentic Tuna Fishing Off The NC Coast

Wachese is a tight-knit fishing village known for its deep roots in North Carolina’s commercial fishing heritage. Here, you step into a community built on generations of tuna fishing. Our charter operations are distinguished by our commercial rights to fish for giant bluefin tuna.

This is a privilege not available to new market entrants since 1990 due to license grandfathering. This exclusive access grants participants unique entry into a highly specialized sector. Catching bluefin tuna is not only fun, but also a demanding endeavor that can see you reeling in fish weighing anywhere from 200 to 1,200 pounds. It’s an intense challenge that blends skill, strategy and chase thrills.

Unique Charter Experience & Sustainable Practices

By law, every giant Bluefin Tuna we land must be sold. This keeps fishing sustainable and legal under commercial quotas. We turn this into an advantage for our guests. If you catch a Bluefin, the proceeds offset your trip cost and you only cover the fuel for the day. This rare setup gives you a real stake in the catch while respecting conservation rules.
